A police report was filed, and it's being tried as a criminal matter. How do I get it down to a civil matter?

It was just a case of monetary theft of $60,000, but instead of taking it directly to civil court, a police report was filed, and now it's being tried as a criminal proceeding. The criminal proceeding started on 01/25/2010. There have been four proceedings, and the next further one is 05/04/2010 (not sentencing). What can I do (i.e. raise some kind of motion or what) to get it brought down to a civil matter? I live in California.
