I have a Toshiba notebook with sound problems!?

Why is the volume high enough for commercials but not the news. I have done every thing suggested to bring sound up and it is barely audible unless they are selling something. Any suggestions besides using earphones or speakers....Its hard to drag them along in order to use the notebook....light weight and easy to carry was my goal!
